Abstract: In this talk I will give an introduction into the existence and uniqueness theory of linear wave equations: We will compare two different methods establishing the crucial "energy estimates", which allow us to develop existence and uniqueness theorems for wave equations. The first method is a functional analytic approach, whereas the second method, which is popular in general relativity, makes use of geometrical properties.
