Structure preserving finite-mode models
Abstract:
A typical problem with the conventional Galerkin approach for the construction of finite-mode models is to keep structural properties untouched in the process of discretization. We present the relevant mathematical structures (e.g. Hamiltonian formulation) of selected equations of fluid mechanics and describe how they behave under transition from an infinite-dimensional phase space to a finite-dimensional one. Selected finite-mode models preserving these structures are reviewed and their potential usefullness is discussed.
