Decomposing the Riemannian curvature

Abstract:

The main aim of this talk is to introduce, in an interesting geometric example, some basic notions of representation theory. We will state the symmetries of Riemannian curvature tensors, translate these into a suitable algebraic setting, show how to decompose the space of curvature tensors into its irreducible components and relate these to Weyl-, Ricci- and scalar curvature.
