Dear Professors Ghorpade and Krattenthaler,

I just got my copy of the Abhyankar volume, and noticed your article. About your footnote 7, Totaro has pointed out that there is no proof of a squaring principle in [23], because it is false! (This explains why we couldn't do it for Chow groups, where it is also false for the same reasons.) I included Totaro's arguments in section 2 of my Schubert varieties in flag bundles for the classical groups, where I also showed how to fix at least some arguments where one would like to use a squaring principle.
