Starting 1 January 2012 the Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics (ITEP) phases down

(short extract from Gorsky, Morozov, Pakhlov letter, 31.12.2011)

According the ordinance of President Medvedev the Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics (ITEP) was joined to the Kurchatov Nuclear Center. The result of the joining is catastrophic for the Institute and for the famous Theoretical Department and MathPhysics Group. In particular:

--- Scientific trips, trips to conferences, schools for young scientists are forbidden. Visits of foreign scientists became impossible.

--- Numerous obstructions were introduced for teaching of university students and high school students (which was a traditional activity of Theoretical Department).

--- It is forbidden to spend scientific grants according their goals (as salary, trips, computers etc.);

--- Intention to dismiss all scientists having contracts abroad.

--- To diminish basic salaries of leading scientists up to 6000 rubles (200 dollars)

P.S. 8 February. There were heavy conversations during the last month. The situation remains to be heavy. In Sunday, 5 February, the accelerator was seriosly destroyed after conflagration.
