Title: Conjugacy growth of finitely generated groups
Speaker: Alex Evetts (ESI)
Abstract: The conjugacy growth function of a finitely generated group counts the conjugacy classes that one can spell with n generators (just as the standard growth function counts group elements). Like standard growth, the asymptotic behavior of this function is independent of the choice of finite generating set (although it fails to be a commensurability invariant). I will give an overview of what is known about this function, and its associated formal power series, and discuss various approaches for their study. I will focus on what is known in virtually abelian groups (a lot) and more general virtually nilpotent groups (not very much).
