Title: Homomorphisms to 3-manifold groups
Speaker: Daniel Groves (Illinois)
Abstract: I will explain the basic structure of the set of homomorphisms from a finitely generated group to the family of all fundamental groups of compact 3-manifolds, and some applications to 3-dimensional topology. The main result is that the family of all such 3-manifold groups is 'equationally noetherian'. I will explain what this means, and the background to these ideas, and the ideas behind the proof. This is a joint work with Michael Hull and Hao Liang.
