PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN VIENNA: Public transport is convenient and safe. Trams and underground trains generally run until about midnight: first and last trains are listed at each stop. There are also night buses on some routes, but they follow different rules.

Inside each bus, underground or tram carriage there is a list of all the stops on that line. All stops are signposted (at bus and tram stops at the top of the stop sign). Free subway maps are available at information offices. Ticket vending machines take 100 Schilling bank notes but it is advisable to have some small change with you. `Zone 1' covers all of Vienna; the other zones apply to lines to nearby towns, or to Vienna Airport. In particular, if you buy a single ticket (= Einzelfahrkarte) at a vending machine you should press yellow button no. 1 under the `Einzelfahrkarte' table for adults.

The following tickets are available at vending machines, tobacconists, or ticket offices at railway stations.

  1. Single tickets for ATS 17 (available in packs of 5 from tobacconists - ATS 85, or in packs of 4 at vending machines - ATS 68). It is also possible to buy a single ticket inside a tram or bus, but there you have to pay ATS 20 for one ticket. Each single ticket allows travel for one person on a single journey in a well defined direction, and allows any number of transfers between buses, trams and underground trains. The ticket should be stamped once at the beginning of the journey at a blue `Entwerter' machine found at the entrance to underground stations and in buses or trams.
  2. 8-day strip ticket for ATS 265 for a total of 8 (not necessarily consecutive) days of travel (at a vending machine press the green button `U' to obtain such a ticket). One of the eight strips has to be stamped at an Entwerter for each day used, at the beginning of the first journey of that day. After that you just have to carry the ticket with you. These tickets can also be used for several persons travelling together, provided that one field is stamped for each person once for each day and person.
  3. Weekly tickets for ATS 142, valid from Monday to Sunday, and monthly tickets for ATS 500, valid for a calendar month. These are available from ticket offices and tobacconists. When buying your first weekly or monthly ticket ask for the (free) white card onto which the ticket should be stuck. Each card is issued with a number and each weekly/monthly ticket must have this number entered into the space provided - otherwise the ticket is invalid. These tickets are transferable, but if n people travel together, you must be able to produce n tickets!

Transportation from the airport to Bahnhof Landstraße/Wien Mitte

Taxis from the airport to Vienna are expensive, so you should either take the airport bus service from the airport to terminus Bahnhof Landstraße/Wien Mitte/City Terminal/Vienna Hilton Hotel (price around ATS 80, every 20 min., tickets available from the driver), or the airport bus service from the airport to Südbahnhof and Westbahnhof (price around ATS 80, every 30 min., tickets available from the driver), or use a local train from the airport to Bahnhof Wien Mitte (price = 2 single tram tickets = ATS 34, about every 30 min.; tickets are available from a ticket office on the platform from which the train leaves).

(A) Getting to the hotel from Bahnhof Landstraße/Wien Mitte

From Bahnhof Landstraße/Wien Mitte you can either take a taxi to the hotel (about ATS 200), or continue by public transport: take the underground line U4 in the direction `Heiligenstadt'.
