Preface

The 96th Meeting of the Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire took place from October 4 to 7, 2026, in the Bundesinstitut für Erwachsenenbildung (BIFEB) in Strobl (Austria). There was a jubilee to celebrate as we were in Strobl for the tenth time.

The main lectures were given by Matija Bucić (Universität Wien) and Persi Diaconis (Stanford University). Bucić chose to talk about the "Pass to Expander Paradigm". In his insightful lectures (Lecture 1, Lecture 2, Lecture 3), he demonstrated the usefulness of expanders in various contexts and applications. Diaconis on the other hand took a new perspective on Pólya theory in his engaging lectures on "Enumeration under Symmetry (Pólya Theory Revisited)" (Lecture 1, Lecture 2, Lecture 3). The central role here was played by the Burnside process, which he carefully introduced and then applied to trees and partitions. We saw many beautiful results and intriguing open problems.

The contributed talks (see the detailed list below) covered a variety of diverse topics, including Schur positivity, "Fishburn combinatorics", continued fractions, Macdonald polynomials, matroids and standard Young tableaux, lozenge tilings, lattice theory, and partition congruences, among others.

Those who were also present two years earlier at the 92nd Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire could witness a stunning difference in water level of the Wolfgangsee. Then, it had rained cats and dogs continuously for 3 days, this year however spring and summer had been (in all of Europe) extremely dry. These circumstances caused the water level to be almost 2 meters lower than it had been two years ago! However, the weather this time was fantastic (for October) so that many of us went swimming on Tuesday during the lunch break. Sure, doing a header from the institute's pier required some care to not hit the ground ... However, a dip into the lake was extremely enjoyable.
